He'd heard the same joke so many times that he started saying the punchline himself: "How do you make a small fortune in the rocket business? You start with a large one." Whenever people asked why he started a rocket company, he'd just answer that he was trying to find the fastest way to turn a large fortune into a small one.

Even he admits the odds weren't in his favor going in: "I already thought the probability of failure was high and the likelihood of success was low. I thought SpaceX maybe had a 10-20% chance of success."
