Maybe you led some people to Christ over the last months or weeks.

You want to follow up on them and disciple them.

May I suggest: There is a YouVersion plan (in both Afrikaans and English) you can use to disciple young converts. Even though there is a Bible Study for every day for 36 days, I suggest that you go much slower.

Get 3-5 new converts in a group, meet weekly and do one or two of these studies at a time. Take about 60-90 minutes. Just following the directions in each Bible Study.

There is a second option. Download the “Make Disciples” app and register. Get a few new converts in a group of 3-5. Have them download the app and register as well.

Open the app - go to “Discipleship,” then to “Take a Course.” The “Following Jesus” course is specifically for young converts. It is available in 11 languages.

When you choose your course, there is an option for how often you want the next study sent to you. You will receive a notification.

To change the language, go to “Settings.”

Disciple-Makers are world changers

What does it mean to be a disciple-maker? We all know the word disciple, but the word "disciple-maker" is not so common. For 12 years, Jesus made disciples who could make disciples. This means that Jesus made disciple-makers. This reading plan will help you understand the concept and how to do it.

When Jesus came, He gave his disciples a plan to get the gospel to the ends of the earth. That was Plan A. There was no plan B. Because if we do Plan A, there would be no need for Plan B.

But less than 2% of churches are busy with Plan A. And maybe 2% of these 2% of church members are involved in this Plan A.

If you follow this reading plan, you will understand a bit about Plan A.

And only if you get involved in Plan A (with or without your church) will you become a world changer. Today, millions and millions of ordinary people are doing it.

A wasted life - or was it?

Sukey was a feminist long before it was fashionable. In an age when girls were raised to please husbands and birth babies, she had bigger dreams. Her doting daddy treated her more like a son than a daughter. While other girls were learning how to cook and sew, he taught her Latin and Greek. When ladies retired to the parlor after dinner, she joined the men in the library. Because she was allowed to soar intellectually, Sukey set her heart on publishing poetry a century before Jane Austen broke the gender barrier, and she fantasized about being the first woman admitted to Oxford. But her father clipped her wings by forcing her to marry Samuel, a mediocre preacher. She would spend her marriage in rural parishes with country bumpkins.

Their first parish was a dreary village with a mud cottage manse. She gave birth to seven children, only to watch three of them die. A careless midwife maimed the seventh for life. After six difficult pregnancies in eight years, Sukey almost died of exhaustion.

Things looked up when they were called to a richer parish. But Samuel managed money as badly as he preached. When their eighth child was born, he took to the road to earn extra income. He returned home enough times to sire five more children, who all died in infancy. After their manse burned down, Samuel abandoned his family. When he finally returned, Sukey birthed five more babies in rapid succession. He left it to her to educate their passel of kids. Both sons and daughters got as fine an education as the young scholars at Oxford.

When he was sixty-five, Samuel suffered a stroke. Sukey cared for him for seven years while they survived on charity. The feminist who dreamed of publishing poetry spent her life in obscurity. She gave birth to nineteen children, burying eight of them in infancy. Only seven were still alive when she died. You might be tempted to weep for her if you didn’t know the rest of her story.

Her daddy nicknamed her Sukey. But history remembers her by her given name, Susanna, the wife of the Reverend Samuel Wesley. One of her sons, John, sparked a great revival in colonial America that birthed the Revolutionary War. Along the way, he founded the Methodist Church. Another son, Charles, penned more than nine thousand poems and hymns. Samuel Jr. became one of England’s greatest scholars. Hetty became the poet her mother was never allowed to be. Two other daughters were prominent educators.

Every day she would go alone for one hour and prayed for her children. One hour! In the midst of crying and hungry children, the pressures of daily life and a husband which doesn’t seem to be of much help.

All of Sukey’s dreams, and so much more, were realized through the children she nurtured and inspired. One might argue that there would be no United States had there been no Susanna Wesley. Certainly, millions owe their spiritual lives to that woman.

God see what we cannot see. God can see te beginning from the end. We cannot see the end and therefore we often do not understand the present.

While prayer is sometimes difficult and always supernatural, there is also spiritually natural - the human spirit is designed to pray.

Where do I start? Lift your spirit “upward” - and begin to talk to God - with the conviction and surety that He is there. Even if you doubt, pray.

If it is a bit difficult, take two chairs and put them opposite one another. Sit on one and ask God to sit on the other one. And then talk to Him. He is on that chair - He will not disappoint you.

Speaking truth to power

What does it mean anyway? Tell people how wrong the government is? The government knows that already. The same is true for other authority structures also.

I suggest we tell them the truth as it is in Jesus Christ. And this you do one-to-one.

Go to them. Make an appointment. Ask them about their struggles. Present Jesus - the Truth, to them. They don’t need another truth. Help them to measure their lives against what is available in Christ and to submit to His Lordship.

Many believe that activism, including marches—peaceful marches that are rarely peaceful—will change things. It nearly never does.

If you read history, the evidence is there.

During the time of the rule of Idi Amin of Uganda, a cruel and violent man, he started to kill Christians. They fled to the forests. They prayed, they met around the Scriptures. A person would get up to lead the group. Soldiers will find them. Shoot the leader. Another one will get up, and the soldiers will shoot them, too. Over and over - till the soldiers throw down their weapons and cry out for mercy to the living God and join the Christians. Perhaps this is a demonstration of truth to power.

The Roman Empire was conquered by Christians primarily through the same principles.

More than speaking to power, is demonstrating truth to power.

Deep calls unto deep

Are we not wasting too much time on things that are too superficial?

All of us - yes, all of us - are deeply spiritual beings. Let us meet with people in the depths of their being.

I am first referring to other Christians. Isn't it true that we sometimes return from a small group meeting, a Bible Study group or a conversation with a Christian friend feeling dissatisfied, like someone who was served a flat Coke or food without spice, dry and tasteless? We will not feel that way when we talk about the deep things of God.

And what about the atheists, sceptics, unbelievers, gangsters, blasphemers, violent men or people living frivolous lives? Tell them about the deep things of God. Deep calls unto deep - they will understand that much better than all our often superficial spiritual niceties.

Too often, we share superficial things with them and think we will touch their hearts with a cheap gospel.

Share with them the deep things of God - most people are ready for that, especially non-believers; their hearts have deep places that God has created. In all of us, there is a hunger for God - deep in our hearts. But we want to share a spiritually tasteless hot dog with them, oily fries, and a Coke, and think they will seek God after that - they will not - because it will not satisfy their deepest thirst and hunger.

Perhaps our greatest fear should be that we know little of the deep things of God ourselves and therefore cannot tell others about the deep things of God.

Deep calls unto deep.

I read about Saul again this morning. He tried to kill David. His men started to prophesy. He sends others, and they also prophesy. And a third group. Same thing. At last, Saul himself went. And started to prophesy.

You see, miracles and prophesies - remarkable working of the Holy Spirit will not necessarily lead to repentance. Saul had already experienced several miracles. But it didn’t change his heart.

Sometimes extraordinary works of God lead to repentance and salvation.

But it is not necessarily true for all people.

Jesus once told a story: Luke 1:27-31 - He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
