Science Teacher, Engineer, Michigan Grad, Mother, Wife, Sister, Daughter... It is not my job to know everything already, it is simply my job to THINK in public.
@algore@minderoo So, for everyday people to be part of the solution, we should be asking our retirement fund companies for green investment portfolios, and declining the use or purchase of single use plastics?
Dear Science Ts, what is the coolest thing you have ever purchased for your Ss to use in the lab? I have to make a request for our education foundation, but IDK what to choose.
This week feels like a month already! My brain broke Tuesday night during concessions stand duty with 7th graders, where a student literally asked, “how do I wipe out a microwave?” Sometimes I can’t even...
@ElemSciTchr It’s been a while, so I may be misquoting, but I read something about this in a book called “the only girl in the room”: girls get an A- and think they are bad at something; boys get a C+ and think they are great. One bad comment is not the end of the world. Keep your chin up.
@teacher2teacher@MisterSci@JStibitz@MsFrizzleCT @SSSciSongs @ms__kowalczyk @ScienceRocks247@SchylerAnderso1 You don’t have to do everything right 100% of the time... My first year was a disaster at least once every day. The trick is to be okay with your best effort and take good notes so you know what to fix next year.
@realDonaldTrump Plenty of ACTUAL problems requiring your attn... global pandemic, economic recession, global warming, wildfires, hurricanes, trade war w/ China, unsafe start to new school yr, etc... Quit complaining about ppl exercising 1st amendment rights & focus on something you can fix.
Ss returning next week... AND I got a new lab/classroom, AND they are pouring the floor this week, so no access to the room AND there was a fire at the epoxy countertop factory, so no lab tables/counters until Sept, AND I am on maternity leave... got any good virtual labs?
@Ologies I am a science teacher and I have wanted to recommend certain episodes to my students, but I worry about the language. I don’t want parents to complain to my admin. I would love it if you could keep the language PG.
Leaders don’t always have the answers... but they can always demonstrate compassion. They probably can’t fix every problem... but they can always show support. They might not have the expertise... but they can always collaborate with those who do.
A new terrifying thought occurred to me this morning: how can we let students play with fire while they have paper on their face? Are we outlawing Bunsen burners until the pandemic is over and students no longer need to wear masks?
I start w/ biomolecules, then how mutations lead to antibiotic resistance, get passed down to other cells, and by the time we address evolution directly, they're like - oh, that totally makes sense! It helps in a religious community to avoid 'evolution' until they already get it.
Should evolution underpin the Biology curriculum rather than be taught as just a topic? Although US-based, this has me intrigued 🤔 Any thoughts?
