You can worship Jesus, and still honor your country and those who serve it, too.
There has been a push in recent years that has become almost trendy - if you love Jesus or truly care about people, then must hate your country, roll your eyes at anyone with an American flag, and question those who sign up to serve in our military.
In fact, there is even pressure from some that if you say you love Jesus and your country, then you’re branded as a Christian Nationalist or you’re making an idol out of patriotism.
However, it doesn’t have be that way, because here are things that are still true:
1. We are called to love and worship Jesus above all. Anytime, culture contradicts our faith, we must obey God rather than men (Acts 5).
2. Loving Jesus doesn’t mean you have to hate your country. In fact, we’re told to pray for our leaders, obey the law, and honor those who are worth honoring (Rom 13).
3. America isn’t perfect. There are many things from the past that are nothing short of evil, and let’s be honest - things that still need to change. But, you don’t have to hate where you live, or be suspicious of those who want to see this country flourish.
4. We have freedom. As of 2023, Americans are some of the freest people in world. We choose where to live, where to worship, and who to vote for. We even have the freedom to disagree. Why? Because of men and women who served this country and made the ultimate sacrifice. They paid for your freedom with their life.
So, love Jesus, give honor where honor is due, be grateful for your freedom, and remember those who sacrificed all.

What Is the Noonday Demon?
The Noonday Demon. That’s what the monks of Egypt called him long ago. He also goes by the name “acedia.” In his book, The Second Mountain, David Brooks describes this as “a sluggishness of the soul, like an oven set on warm.”
The Noonday Demon is not here to woo us into some gross and outlandish sin that will be the juicy topic of neighborhood gossip. No, he’s the cheerleader of slow suicides, as every vestige of hope, joy, and light bleeds out of the bottom of our graying souls.
Psalm 91 calls this demon “the destruction that wastes at noonday.”
There’s only one solution for exorcising this demon—and it’s certainly not you or me or Jim Beam. It’s the despair-fighting, darkness-trampling Rabbi who’s never met a demon whose nose he didn’t bloody.
Jesus rolls into our lives, hauls the trash bags of our despair out to the curb, opens the curtains on our benighted lives, and cranks up the music of joy that sounds like nails on the chalkboard to demonic ears.
He cleans us up. Patches up our souls. And hands us a mug of strong, hot hope to sip until we feel human again. Jesus comes into our lives “long after the thrill of livin’ is gone.” And he shows us that life is not about us anyway; it’s about him. He *is* our life. He will hold us and love us and forgive us and smile his grace into our tired and weary souls as long as it takes.
No Noonday Demon stands a chance against the God who hung from noon till three on a cross because he’d rather die than spend eternity apart from us.
Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

A prayer for leaders heading into a new year:
.
Heavenly Father,
Please give me character
that exceeds my gifts,
and humility that exceeds my influence.
Remember: the things people applaud in your life are the very things that will wreck your soul.
Do more, bigger, better, faster is found in the devil's ministry (See desert temptations), not Jesus'.
Congratulations to @gainesvillefb, @JoshNiblett, and the entire coaching staff, faculty, and administration of @GCSS_GHS on an incredible year…what you’re building is special!!!
