Today, Belgian police blocked me — a sitting Member of the European Parliament — from entering the European Parliament for nearly an hour.

They were on the phone with Brussels Mayor Philippe Close, who was personally directing their actions. We have video footage of the incident.

The Mayor prevented me from delivering over half a million European citizens’ signatures for the @SaveEuropeAct initiative.

This is unacceptable.

The EU is a union of 27 member states. No single country — and certainly not one socialist mayor of a single city — has the right to decide which MEPs from other nations can carry out their democratic duties.

Tears still fall when we see this rare archival footage of the forced exile of the #Christian #Greeks from their own ancestral lands.

This is a historical/educational tweet about the Greek Genocide.

The Ottoman Empire, under the Young Turk government (Committee of Union and Progress) and later Kemalist forces, carried out a systematic campaign of persecution, mass murder, and expulsion against the native Greek population of Asia Minor, Pontus, and Eastern Thrace.

This formed part of a broader effort to eliminate Christian minorities and create an ethnically and religiously homogeneous Turkish state.

Over 350,000 Pontian Greeks are estimated to have been killed, with total Greek deaths across regions ranging from several hundred thousand to as many as 1 million, according to various scholarly estimates.

Persecutions began intensifying in 1914 with boycotts, arbitrary arrests, property seizures, and forced conscription of men into lethal labor battalions (Amele Taburları), where most perished from exhaustion, starvation, disease, and execution.

The physical destruction was accompanied by a systematic economic campaign. Under the pretext of laws dealing with "abandoned goods" (Emval-i Metruke), the state seized the homes, lands, businesses, and bank accounts of the deported and murdered Greeks. This mass expropriation stripped the Christian communities of centuries of wealth to build a new national economy.

Beyond physical and economic destruction, this campaign constituted a profound cultural genocide. The perpetrators aimed to erase all historical traces of the Greek presence. Ancient towns were systematically renamed, schools were shut down, and thousands of centuries-old monuments, churches, and monasteries were either destroyed, desecrated, or converted.

Women, children, and the elderly endured death marches designed to kill without pulling a trigger. Deportees were forced to walk for weeks across brutal terrain without food, water, or shelter. Anyone who collapsed from hunger or exposure was either shot on the spot or left to die by the roadsides. Thousands died from disease and attacks by irregular forces. Entire villages were burned.

These atrocities occurred alongside the Armenian Genocide and massacres of Assyrians, as part of the same late Ottoman campaign against Christian populations.

Contemporary evidence is extensive: reports from American consuls and ambassadors, Western missionaries, European diplomats, and relief organizations documented the events in real time.

The violence deliberately targeted Christian clergy. A prominent example is Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna, who refused to abandon his flock in 1922. He was arrested, tortured, and lynched by a mob - an act of martyrdom that symbolizes the tragedy.

In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) officially recognized the Greek Genocide, affirming that the Ottoman campaign against Pontian and Anatolian Greeks constituted genocide, alongside those against Armenians and Assyrians.

This was the violent erasure of a civilization with roots stretching back three millennia.

In 1941, a 24-year-old woman knocked on the door of the British consulate in Bilbao, Spain. With her stood a Belgian soldier and a Scottish pilot whom she had just guided across the Pyrenees mountains on foot, in the freezing dark of winter.

She introduced herself as Andrée de Jongh and calmly explained that she had created an underground escape network stretching all the way from occupied Belgium. She told the officials that she could keep doing it, but she needed funding to sustain the operation.

The British officials did not believe her. The consulate sent an urgent message to London, and the reply was cold and dismissive.

They assumed it was a trap set by the German secret police.

To them, it seemed completely impossible that a young woman of her age could pull off such a dangerous feat. They refused to give her any money or support.

Instead of giving up, Andrée turned around. She hiked right back over the treacherous mountains into occupied territory to keep doing exactly what she had promised.

Andrée grew up in Brussels, the daughter of a schoolteacher. When she was a little girl, she read the story of Edith Cavell, a British nurse executed during World War I for helping Allied soldiers escape. That story stayed with her.

When the German army marched into Brussels in May 1940, Andrée was working as a commercial artist. She immediately knew she could not just sit by and watch.

She started small, volunteering to help wounded soldiers, organizing safe houses, and moving people between secret locations. But she quickly realized that hiding them was not enough.

These stranded soldiers and shot-down pilots needed to get completely out of occupied Europe so they could fight another day.

Andrée mapped out a massive, thousand-mile escape route that ran from Brussels, through Paris, down to the south of France, and finally over the steep Pyrenees mountains into neutral Spain. She called it the Comet Line.

It was an incredibly perilous journey. The Nazis had set up checkpoints everywhere, cities were crawling with informants, and anyone who turned in an Allied soldier was promised a massive financial reward. A single mistake meant death. Yet, Andrée managed to build a network of ordinary heroes. She recruited farmers who hid men in their barns, priests who provided temporary sanctuary, and everyday families who shared their meager rations and offered a warm bed for the night.

She personally forged identity documents, memorized train schedules, and studied enemy patrol patterns. Whenever a group reached the south of France, Andrée took over as their personal guide for the hardest part of the journey.

Crossing the Pyrenees took two full nights of intense hiking. The paths were steep, covered in snow during the winter, and slick with mud and rain in the spring. She led men who were exhausted, terrified, and often carrying painful injuries.

"Keep moving," she would tell them in a quiet, firm voice. "Do not stop."

She made this grueling journey thirty-three times.

Eventually, London realized she was telling the truth. They gave her the code name “Dedee” and began supporting her network, which ultimately saved 118 Allied airmen through her direct efforts. But the Gestapo was closing in.

In January 1943, Andrée was captured at a remote farmhouse in the French Basque country. She was only twenty-six years old. The German secret police interrogated her brutally for weeks. She looked them in the eye and said, "I am the one who organized everything. I did it alone to protect the others."

The Gestapo did not believe her either. They could not accept that a young woman was the mastermind behind one of Europe's most successful escape lines.

Because they underestimated her, they didn't execute her on the spot. Instead, they sent her to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, and later to Mauthausen.

She survived the horrors of those camps for over two years until American troops liberated her in 1945.

The Britons – England’s First Christians

The Britons, the native people of this land, were among the first in Europe to follow Christ. By the 2nd and 3rd centuries, Britain already had bishops, churches and martyrs such as St Alban, who died for the faith around AD 304.

They were farmers, herdsmen, warriors and builders, a rooted people who worked the land, raised families and defended their homes. They spoke an ancient tongue, created bold designs in metal and stone, and held a deep love for this island and its soil.

When the old order fell, they kept the Gospel alive in villages, hills and along the ancient roads. Across the lands later called Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Shropshire, they built chapels, raised crosses and passed down the faith.

The Britons did not vanish when the Angles and Saxons came. They mixed, married and fought alongside them, and in time became one people.

From that union came the English, heirs of both Briton and Saxon. The blood and faith of those first Christians still flows through our veins.

For nearly two thousand years, Christianity has lived in this land. We carry the legacy, courage and duty of our ancestors. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
