The summer heatwave gripping southern Europe right now is nothing new — it's an ancient, recurring weather pattern.

The classic name for these hot winds (and the associated air masses) blowing northward from the Sahara Desert across the Mediterranean into southern Europe is the Sirocco.

It transports warm, dry — and often dusty — air from North Africa. The suit was over one sentence in a 2019 TED Talk and a single tweet, in which she said Banks had lied about a secret relationship with the Russian government. Banks denied it. He had, however, admitted meeting Russian embassy officials multiple times more than he originally told a Parliamentary committee.

@guardian, her own publisher, declined to fund her defence.

She crowdfunded her legal costs from 29,000 members of the public.

She faced potential costs of up to £1 million. She eventually won on the main issues in the High Court in 2022, but lost on appeal on one narrow point.

She was ordered to pay Banks £35,000 in damages, issue an apology, and delete certain tweets. She was also hit with a costs order of over £1 million.

The woman who exposed how democracy gets bought had to beg the public for money to stay solvent while doing it.

Seventeen press freedom organisations called the case an attempt to intimidate and silence public interest journalism. The UK government eventually introduced anti-SLAPP legislation. Partly because of what happened to her.

In the UK, you can crowdfund a journalist's survival costs after she exposes the possible corruption of a referendum ..

CQC ORDERED A SECRET PSYCH REPORT ON THE WOMAN WHO TOLD THE TRUTH

In 2011 Kay Sheldon @KayFSheldon sat on the board of the @CareQualityComm, the body meant to keep @NHS care safe. She raised concerns about bullying, poor leadership and failing culture inside the regulator itself, right in the middle of the Mid Staffs scandal.

The CQC did not investigate the culture. It investigated her.

Chair Dame Jo Williams commissioned an occupational health doctor to assess Sheldon's mental state without her knowledge. The doctor never met her in person. He spoke to her once, briefly, on the phone. His conclusion was that she might be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia..

Williams then repeated this to MPs on the Commons health committee, in public, claiming Sheldon had been found in a toilet distressed and not recognising her own name. MPs stepped in and made her withdraw it. She later apologised.

Williams also wrote to then health secretary Andrew Lansley asking for Sheldon to be removed from the board. Sheldon started legal action instead. She kept her seat.

The Health Select Committee later concluded her concerns were legitimate and said the CQC had failed to act on them. Williams resigned as chair.

Around the same time the CQC was also sitting on a suppressed internal review showing its own inspection of Morecambe Bay's maternity unit had missed serious failings. Up to 16 babies and 2 mothers died. James Titcombe @JamesTitcombe, who lost his son Joshua at that same trust, worked alongside Sheldon while she was raising the alarm.

So the watchdog spent more energy diagnosing its whistleblower than fixing the thing she was warning about. Efficient, if nothing else.

Take away the hydrocarbons, and we lose virtually overnight everything that makes us modern.

The world relies almost entirely on hydrocarbon byproducts. It's an intricate, deeply woven symbiosis that cannot be replaced by simply stumping up a big battery—an industrial-scale solution that hasn't even been invented yet.

Wind and solar cannot produce a single one of the thousands of derivatives that cascade from oil, honed by more than a century of invention and assimilation.

Without these derivatives, the visible iconography of wind turbines and solar farms could not be built in the first place. They would be unable to darken our familiar landscapes with dystopian industrial grids. Global reliance on hydrocarbons affects the entire human production chain—from the extraction and processing of metals and rare earths to refining and manufacturing.

Take bitumen, which rolled out the entire world's networks of roads and highways. Think about the heavy, diesel-powered machinery, maritime shipping and aviation fleets that move food and raw materials worldwide. They rely almost exclusively on hydrocarbons for both fuel and lubrication. Imagine a world without them.

Modern medicine and healthcare are fundamentally built on hydrocarbon derivatives. High-grade medical equipment, sterile syringes, intravenous tubing, surgical gloves and the plastic casings for life-saving machinery - they are all manufactured from petrochemical resins. There is not a single sterile modern hospital in the entire world that could function without oil.

The global food supply chain is equally linked to hydrocarbon extraction. The insulation on electrical wiring and the advanced polymers inside every television and smartphone ever built come from fossil fuel derivatives. Meanwhile, oil and natural gas remain the fundamental precursors to all industrial fertilisers and pesticides.

Think of commonplace items like paints, synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, detergents, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. They all depend directly on hydrocarbons.

A renewable energy culture will never replace the raw physical material that builds the roads, runs the hospitals, grows the food and makes our technology function.

This deeply woven foundation is the essence of modern life.

To replace global fossil fuel consumption with solar would take 274 billion panels.

The energy to mine, manufacture and install those panels translates to 96 billion barrels of oil, 374 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 23 billion tons of coal.

Then there's the fact that solar panels last only 15 to 20 years before needing replacing, meaning the cycle of mining, smelting and building repeats every generation.

Even if 274 billion panels were built and installed, solar doesn't deliver 24-7 power. Massive backup systems, batteries, gas plants or other infrastructure would still be required, demanding billions more tons of material.

You can't mine and manufacture your way out of the second law of thermodynamics.

Solar is not a one-time build. It's an industrial treadmill: endless mining, endless rebuilding, endless waste -- all to chase an illusion of replacing the dense, affordable and reliable energy we already have.

Otto Warburg, who took the Nobel Prize in 1931 for working out how cells turn fuel into energy, saw that tumour cells abandon the elegant oxygen-powered machinery every healthy cell depends on and fall back on a crude, ancient fermentation instead, guzzling sugar like a flooded engine. He believed this broken metabolism sat near the very root of the disease. Then molecular biology arrived, the gene took centre stage, and cancer was quietly recast as a fault in corrupted DNA. Warburg's observation was filed under historical curiosity and left to gather dust.

Enter Thomas Seyfried, professor of biology at Boston College, who has spent decades hauling that old idea back into the light. His case, laid out in a dense and serious book called Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, is that the establishment has spent a fortune chasing the wrong suspect. If the fault is metabolic, sitting in the cell's own power plants, you might strike the tumour by changing what you feed it. Cancer cells gorge on glucose and an amino acid called glutamine. The fuel they struggle to run on is ketones, the very fuel a body makes once you strip the carbohydrate away. Starve the tumour of sugar while healthy cells switch contentedly to fat, the theory goes, and you have a line of attack with no hair falling out and no poison in the drip.

Now the honest part, because it matters and I have no interest in overselling it. This is no magic diet that melts tumours over breakfast. Seyfried himself is blunt that going keto alone is not a cancer treatment, that it belongs under proper medical supervision as one arm of a wider protocol, and that the science is still being fought over hard. Anyone selling you a cure in a smoothie is lying to your face.

But watch how the machine reacts to the question being asked at all. A serious scientist revives the work of a Nobel laureate, points at something nobody can patent, and is met not with curiosity but a shrug and a sneer. The genetic theory has set like concrete, and concrete hates being asked for its receipts after half a century and untold billions, with the death rates for the big cancers barely moved.

So ask the plain question. If the answer turned out to be a diet, who funds the trial to prove it? A cure you eat refills nobody's quarterly report.
