"The learning loss crisis is more consequential than many elected officials have yet acknowledged. A collective sense of urgency by all Americans will be required to avert its most devastating effects on the nation's children."

Very happy that my paper “School in the time of covid” is part of this special issue on public health ethics during the pandemic.
I hope the volume inspires more critical analysis of pandemic policy from a range of academic fields.
Finally, a Democrat governor acknowledges what a mistake school closures were and how badly they affected women, and vows to get to the bottom of how it all happened. 🔥🔥🔥from @GovKathyHochul.
Your move, @GavinNewsom.
New paper by our member @ShamikDasgupta1 arguing that school closures were a "moral catastrophe".
Includes a discussion of the deranged political dynamics that went down in Berkeley CA. What a sorry & inexcusable episode. @BerkeleyUnified

My paper "School in the time of Covid" is now published!
It's not timely and won't be as widely read as the terrific op ed pieces on this topic over the past 2 years. But I'm glad to contribute something to the academic record about this catastrophe. May it never be repeated.
“You Can Want the Schools to Stay Open and Teachers to Teach, and Test to Understand What Students Know and Not be a White Supremacist” @CAParentPower @BerkeleyOpen https://t.co/R7nf8XIPD2
At the school board meeting yesterday there were several calls to enhance mental health services. A claim that I have been making since Sep 2020. This is serious and acute, given this week’s events.
Retweet if you agree. #berkeley#thinkdifferently@MaraKole@BerkeleyOpen
We need STUDENTS FIRST candidates for school board. And we need them now.
Endorsements from the political establishment don't representing STUDENTS FIRST. Think about it when you vote. #thinkdifferently@BerkeleyOpen@marakole@JeanneNoble18@JesseArreguin

More evidence that school mask mandates have no measurable effect on covid outcomes — this is a lovely quasi-experimental design from Spain.
@BerkeleyUnified made exactly the right call to drop its mask mandate next week, let’s hope other districts follow. @CAParentPower
In Catalonia 🇪🇸, 6yo wore masks in schools but 5yo did not
A brilliant team used this to see what effect mask wearing had on #COVID19 transmission
Finding: No difference between the two groups
Conclusion: No meaningful effect of masking school children

Some will choose to continue masking, others will choose not to - may all choices be respected!
@arthur_samuels puts it beautifully:

NYC educators and parents, tomorrow please
👉 Don't imply that there is a "right" choice.
👉 No "take that mask off, I'd love to see you smile."
👉 No "keeping your mask on is a sign of respect."
Just let kids know that you love them & are happy to see them, masked or not.
. @BerkeleyUnified will end its mask mandate on March 14!
It's a symbolic date - exactly 2 years since schools closed. After all they've been forced to give up, these kids deserve this release. Thank you @BerkeleyUnified for doing the right thing. 1/2
