Thankful today (and everyday) for @TyroneGayle - for the life he lived and the lessons he taught us. May we all aspire to have even an ounce of the joy he has in this photograph. #GayleNationForever
My thoughts this AM. Regardless of what happens, @TyroneGayle would be proud to have been an early part of what @KamalaHarris team.
And he's be looking in on friends like @brianefallon and @IanSams with a big, approving smile.
Then he'd tell everyone to get back to work. lfg
All of these decisions he treated with the same weight and import as other nat sec decisions - and approached with a scientist’s mind, deep thoughtfulness for complex change, and compassion. Thinking today of the many(!) lives he influenced, and all that learned from him.
So sad and shocked to learn of the passing of former SecDef Ash Carter. I was lucky enough to have Sec Carter as a boss and mentor, and am enormously grateful for his leadership and legacy. He was a tough boss, but his brilliance made us all better.
Ash Carter, who served as secretary of defense in the final two years of the Obama administration and opened military jobs to women and ended a ban on transgender people serving in the military, has died at age 68. https://t.co/GEuVNdoRCq
I carry his lessons with me every day in the Pentagon. He taught me that people matter, and instilled in me a deep passion for personnel issues. I watched him make hard decisions, like opening all combat positions to women and overturning the ban on transgender service.
Preventing sexual assault in the military requires commitment from every echelon of leadership. The On-Site Installation Evaluation Report will provide leaders with greater local visibility that can be scaled. It's opportunity for us to lead, and we will. https://t.co/pqmRrwUAn6
.@DepSecDef: This Administration has placed an unprecedentedly high priority on this challenge set [of eliminating sexual assault and sexual harassment from the military].
Biden is backing a major effort to reform the military’s handling of sexual assault after consulting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about an unprecedented plan to remove decisions on prosecuting cases from unit commanders

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for the first time says he'll support removing decisions on sexual assault prosecutions from military commanders, @AP has learned. Proponents of the change say the military has failed to make progress against sexual assault. https://t.co/018H6rJXDs
This is a HUGE deal and something the Pentagon has resisted for years in fight to end military sexual assault: Defense Secretary Austin has recommended to @POTUS "removing the prosecution of sexual assaults and related crimes from the military chain of command"
Beautiful statement on a legend of a man. It is impossible to be a Virginian and not feel John Warner's influence in countless ways. He will be so missed.
I am stunned at the loss of John Warner. Virginia has lost an unmatched leader, and my family has lost a dear friend. My condolences go out to Jeanne and the entire Warner family.
Sexual assault and sexual harassment in our military remains a significant problem, but we are taking action. Today, I had the pleasure of attending the kickoff meeting for the 90-Day Independent Review Commission on sexual assault in the military. (1/3)
“While it has only been 5 years since all combat jobs have opened to women, women have been in the line of fire, risking their lives to protect our nation, long before that,” @VP Harris says #IWD
Honored to meet with Lynn Rosenthal today & announce her role as chair of the DOD Independent Review Commission (IRC) on Sexual Assault. I look forward to the IRC's candid assessment & recommendations for improving our response to combatting sexual assault in the military. (1/3)
.@Lynnspeaksout is an incredible choice to lead the @DeptOfDefense's work to combat sexual assault in the military. She is a long-time advocate in the fight against gender-based violence, including on college campuses.
