Through volunteer power we provide tangible necessities, systems navigation & advocacy to help end the cycles of homelessness. Street Outreach every T/W/Sat/Sun
Another busy Saturday outreach shift in downtown Calgary. 💙
Last night, our BeTheChangeYYC team connected with 95 people across Stephen Avenue and the East Village.
Throughout the shift, our team provided immediate support while helping connect people with longer-term resources:
🏠 3 housing referrals/connections
🪪 3 ID clinic referrals
🍽️ 6 food-resource connections
🛏️ 2 emergency shelter connections
🩹 3 first-aid interventions
💜 1 naloxone response
🚑 EMS was called twice when additional medical support was needed
We also distributed water, food, warm clothing, harm-reduction supplies and other essentials throughout the afternoon.
A huge thank you to Team Lead Garth and volunteers Mariam, Bruce, Hilal, Morgan, Signe and Luke for giving their Saturday to support our community.
Street outreach is about more than handing out supplies. It’s about meeting people where they are, responding to immediate needs, building trust, connecting people with services, and helping make our public spaces safer for everyone.
Every shift matters. Every connection matters. 💙

Over 3,000 Calgarians were unhoused on a single night in the most recent Point-in-Time Count. Most of us know that number. Far fewer of us have heard from the people behind it

Ending the Stigma: Introducing Hear Their Voice YYC
Over 3,000 Calgarians are unhoused on a single night. That's our neighbours.
HearTheirVoice YYC is a Calgary initiative built on the simple idea that everyone deserves to be heard. Our goal is simple: break down the stigma around homelessness in Calgary by listening to the real stories of our unhoused neighbors and frontline volunteers.
This is the first of many conversations. Share this video with someone who needs to hear it. Follow along for what comes next.

Last night, our BeTheChangeYYC outreach team connected with 85 people across Calgary, including 45 people reported as sleeping outside.
Team Lead Graham and volunteer Alejandro started the evening along 17th Avenue and Tomkins Park, where they had a great first round connecting with people in the community.
Later, while conducting outreach near the 7th Avenue LRT station, the shift changed quickly.
Our team encountered a person experiencing an overdose. 911 was called and two doses of naloxone were administered while our team waited for EMS to arrive.
While Graham responded to the medical emergency, Alejandro stepped up and managed both outreach carts and supplies, helping keep the team and their equipment together during a challenging situation.
Afterward, the team took time to check in and debrief before finishing the shift.
This is part of what street outreach can look like. Some nights are about food, water, clothing, referrals and conversations. Other nights, our volunteers find themselves responding to a life-threatening emergency.
We are incredibly grateful for the people who continue to show up for our community. 💙
85 people supported.
45 people sleeping rough.
2 doses of naloxone administered.
1 emergency response.
And behind every number is a person.

Street outreach is complex.
We meet people where they are, help stabilize immediate needs and connect people to housing, detox, treatment and other supports.
We also recognize that public spaces belong to everyone.
Our role is to support the person in front of us while helping create a safer, more compassionate Calgary.

Thank you, Graham, for going above and beyond and helping #BeTheChangeYYC! 💙
83 people reached in one Sunday evening. ❤️
Yesterday, our BeTheChangeYYC street outreach team headed out across downtown Calgary, meeting people where they were and providing practical support, essential supplies and connections to services.
During the shift, our team recorded connections for housing, ID services, food resources, harm reduction and clothing supports, while distributing water, food, socks, hygiene supplies, naloxone and other essentials.
But outreach is about more than what’s inside our red carts. It’s about showing up, building trust, listening, and helping someone take that next step when they’re ready.
A huge thank you to Team Lead Graham and Hilal for another evening on the streets — and to every volunteer, donor and supporter who makes this work possible. ❤️
Every contribution helps us keep our teams walking the streets of Calgary four days a week.

Clean socks can help prevent blisters and infections. Food and water can support stability. Naloxone and emergency supplies can help save lives.
Our teams are out evenings and weekends because homelessness doesn’t stop at 5 pm

Team Lead Graham and Alejandro are out on shift tonight in downtown Calgary. ❤️
Take a look inside the red carts as they make a stop in a downtown back alley.
Those carts carry more than supplies. They’re packed with food, water, clothing, hygiene items, first aid supplies, naloxone and other essentials our team uses while connecting with people experiencing homelessness.
Tonight, Graham and Alejandro are walking the streets, meeting people where they’re at, checking in, building relationships and helping connect people with resources and supports when needed.
This is what street outreach looks like — one conversation, one connection and one person at a time.
Thank you to our volunteers and everyone who donates, shares our work and helps keep these carts stocked. ❤️

🚨 AISH & ADAP CONCERNS
We tested Alberta’s benefit estimator using $1,072/month in employment income - previously exempt under AISH.
The estimator shows:
➡️ ADAP: ~$25 benefit reduction
➡️ AISH: ~$722 benefit reduction
Same employment income.
For Albertans with severe disabilities, these numbers deserve an immediate review.
We’re asking Premier @ABDanielleSmith, Minister @neudorf_ab and the Government of Alberta @YourAlberta to clarify:
We are hoping this is just one big oversight. Is this the intended outcome?
Housing insecurity can become homelessness.

Yesterday, our BeTheChangeYYC outreach team connected with 64 people experiencing homelessness across Calgary.
During the shift, our team recorded:
- 34 people sleeping rough
- 11 housing-related connections
- 8 ID clinic referrals
- 34 food-source connections
- 11 clothing-related connections
Our team also distributed water, snacks, hygiene supplies, socks, warm clothing, naloxone kits, backpacks and other essential items.
One of the most notable observations from the shift came from Tomkins Park, where our team would normally expect to connect with a significant number of people. Due to a public event taking place in the park, people experiencing homelessness had reportedly been moved from the area earlier in the day.
This is an important reminder that homelessness does not disappear when people are moved from one public space to another.
Street outreach is not only about handing out supplies. It is about finding people where they are, building trust, helping people navigate housing and other services, and continuing to advocate for long-term solutions.
Thank you to our outreach team and volunteers who continue showing up for our community.
