Where I come from (the Tiv culture from Benue State Nigeria in West Africa) we believe that eating from the same plate or rather eating together promotes Unity in the family as our people would say "A family that eats together stays together"
Tiv people always eat together in their homes,in the farm, burials, weddings, in the market, and other events..and when outsiders sees us eating like this, they mavel
...you'll never see a Tiv man putting his fingers inside the soup and licking his fingers while eating ...the rest would abandon the food for you😂
....if you also notice Tiv people don't fence they're home when built in the village, you can build your house in the city and fence it but not in your village. The reason is this, a Tiv man believes in eating his food outside in the compound so that he can invite his brother or even a stranger passing on the street and through that save a life.
So if you visit a Tiv man don't expect to see him eats on dining table, I've never used the one in my house too just there.
in the Tiv culture you'll see a visitor insisting to have someone eat with him .... And I was the little one in the house so they always assign me to eat with visitors back then in the village 😔. This is because we're used to not eating alone...its something I was taught which I loved some much and would teach my family too. Infact I learnt a lot growing up in the village which I must also give to world, food is nothing to a Tiv man... oo yes they give out food freely
Below is a picture of Tiv men eating together from the same plate at an event
...this is one of the Facts about the Tiv culture that people don't talk about except to spread lies that when you visit a Tiv man he'll give you his wife for the night..stop spreading rumors and what you don't have fact.
