Iran would not have had this kind of firepower if more countries had applied sanctions on the tankers transporting Iranian crude oil.
Although the US Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed sanctions on 142 VLCC supertankers transporting Iranian crude, another 42 have yet to be blacklisted. One of those tankers has transported 50 million barrels over the past six years. That is around $3 billion worth of oil, people.
Have the UK or EU applied any sanctions on Iranian tankers? Not really, no; only when those tankers have violated the price cap on Russian oil transports. Now both the UK and the EU are facing the consequences of that in the Middle East and as far away as Cyprus.
While the UK and EU have prioritized sanctions on Russia, and the US has prioritized sanctions on Iran and previously Venezuela, they have all overlooked the fact that the Dark Fleet functions as a global Uber service for oil. If those vessels are cut off from one market, all they have to do is move on to the next one.
Sanctions are a matter of appetite and coordination, and there simply needs to be more of both.
We encourage governments to review each other's lists and see which vessels need to be blacklisted: https://t.co/mO5e1gM9iT

@but75455972 It's not like the Catholic Church. It's peaceful and everyone knows the order of succession ahead of time. It's logical and always goes to the next highest ranking member of the Quorum of the Twelve. It won't play a part in the motive. Or, at least it shouldn't.
@RassieRugby Happy birthday! It was lovely meeting you! Thanks for the scrum! ๐ You owe me a shirt if you ever come back to Jersey as there wasn't one at the hotel. ๐ Good luck in the test matches. Please smash England!
