A wide variety of friends is one of my favorite things about living. Friends of diverse categories, I’m here to propose, make the world go merrily round. I caught myself smiling with a good many teeth about this today while driving home from the grocery store.

I have friends with whom I share a love of books, others, a love of music or movies or dramatic series or birds or dogs or critters or trees. Oh, and basketball. Well, and hair.

Others who share my deep appreciation for absolute absurdities. For the kinds of things I find most hilarious.

Those with whom I share a near drunkenness — euphoria, I do mean light-headedness — on the sight of most any kind of newborn. Human, calf, canine, kitten, rabbit, name it.

Those, you probably know, with whom I share a love of Jesus, of Scripture, of wallowing in Scripture until we’ve nearly worn the ink off a page and God himself has grown weary of us.

Let me think what else.

Hmmmm. Did I say food???

I think this has been a grace from God in a fairly challenging existence to love lots of different things and, so, lots of kinds of people that love those different kinds of things. I reckon this is a large part of what keeps me out here and in it. And smiling with a good many teeth.

“Awesome.”
That’s a word we throw around a lot these days.

A new song is awesome.
A burger is awesome.
Even a pair of shoes can be “awesome.”

But there’s really only one Person we can truly use that word for—and that’s God.
God is awesome.

Isaiah 9:6 says,

“His name shall be called Wonderful.”

The word “wonderful” comes from “wonder,” which means:
amazement, surprise, astonishment, admiration, bewilderment, worship, and awe.

Here are a few thoughts on just how wonderful—and truly awesome—our God is.

I think to think on simpler things, to slow ourselves to a snail’s pace, is a secret to prolific gratitude. To forsake the screens and engage the senses. Sit outside, for instance, and lose count numbering the shades of green.

Close your eyes and listen for this bird and that and think how the least impressive to the eye, say, an otherwise forgettable wren, often sings the loveliest songs.

Hold a leaf underside up and run your fingertip along its veins.

Appreciate the intricate work of the spider before you sweep away its web.

And be a good kind of weird about food this holiday season and not so miserably neurotic unless it threatens your health. Unnecessary guilt holds a pillow to the face of gratitude.

Sanctify the meal with thanksgiving. That’s what the Bible says. Bless it and it will bless. Take time to taste before you swallow. Dwell a moment on it. Think how God could have created us without need of food or with need perhaps but only for nourishment, no enjoyment necessary.

Take a single bite and search out traces of a teaspoon of vanilla quietly disseminated in the whole pie.

Rejoice and be glad for the triumvirate of kitchen graces! Onions, garlic and celery! Their boastful fragrance simmering in salted butter.

Think how, in this ever crueler world, there are still babies and puppies and kittens and hopping goats and, to God be the glory, ossicones crowning the heads of giraffes.

Awake from slumber, ye screen-numbed souls. There is no end to the gratitude of one paying attention. The Lord, the Lord, concocting, kind and creative, has once again dealt bountifully with us.

I walk through these woods this morning, a north wind blowing and tall pines creaking, sycamores surrendering their giant leaves, all nature swaying to the rhythm of at last a changing season, I bring my burdens to the Lord — my pleadings,

“how long, O Lord??”

— And yes for me but not just for me. For wounded people I deeply love. For some to whom it seems the pain never ends.

The wind whips up words into a path before me I’ve walked a thousand times. Words my heart hears as an invitation:

Just around the bend.

Oh let it be, Lord. Let that be the hope lent to the labored and heavy laden by your Holy Spirit and not just the yearnings of human imagination. And let it be for all who are weary, for all who have long prayed.

Oh let it be, Lord Jesus, for every brother and sister who dares to keep walking into an uncertain future, faithing, hoping, praying. Let some answers to petitions long pled be waiting for each of us
