The U.S. and Russia are intensifying their rivalry in Africa's Sahel, with both countries increasing security involvement in the region.
Russia recently sent a major naval-backed arms shipment to Mali to support the Malian military against local militant groups.

Russia's military engagement, now jointly done by the Africa Corps and Malian FAMa, includes direct combat support and has expanded as West African countries pivot away from Western partners.

The U.S. in contrast, announced a $2.3 million security package for Niger to bolster border security and counterterrorism.

The difference between the two parties is that the Saheleans love Russia and President Putin, but the same can't be said about the US and its European partners.
