One year out from my last day in uniform, I’ve had a lot of endings that close chapters, not the story. It doesn’t mean those endings don’t still hurt, they do. I choose the smile anyway. Here’s why.

Tomorrow, Pride Month begins.
Queer folks face real challenges right now—which is exactly why it matters to remember: LGBTQIA+ people lead in extraordinary ways and build brighter futures for all of us.
It's why we wrote Forging Queer Leaders.
Maybe somebody who needs this can read it. 🏳️🌈
Between the hiking, altitude, disc golf, and trying to heed my wife’s admonition of “don’t fall off a mountain,” my downtime in Colorado was perfect for revisiting some of the books I recommend most often and thinking about the future.

Community Highlight: Northern Virginia Food Rescue
The campaign may be over, but the work to build stronger communities goes on.
During my campaign, I wanted to highlight people and organizations doing incredible work every day to help our communities thrive. We started recording these conversations right before the redistricting ruling and didn’t get the chance to share them.
I don’t want that work to stop. So today I’m starting with Dr. Megan Franco and Northern Virginia Food Rescue in Manassas.
Food insecurity exists even in some of the wealthiest areas of Virginia. @novafoodrescue is tackling it with an innovative network of food donors, volunteers, and distribution partners. They’ve already distributed more than 30 million meals into the community!
Watch their story. Check out their work. And consider getting involved.
Who should we highlight next? If you know someone whose story should be told, send me a suggestion or make a connection.
While I’ll make a decision on my own future path soon, you can count on me to always put country first and to remain part of the fight for an America that is better tomorrow than it is today.

One year ago, the Supreme Court allowed the transgender military ban to move forward, ending the careers of countless dedicated service members.
Donald Trump can take away our uniforms, but he can't take away our fight.
That’s why I’m running for Congress. Because every American is the right kind of American, and every voice deserves to be heard.
🇺🇸 Tonight I am going live with @BFram3 at 6pm for a conversation about the state of our democracy and how we’re working to build a new Democratic movement in Virginia.
I’m honored to be sharing this live stream with Bree, running in VA-11. Tune in tonight.
