The local sparrow population has been visiting my garden in Portslade all winter. Due to the mild weather there has been plenty of natural food. During the cold snap they swapped to visiting the bird feeder. Back to foraging in the foliage today @btnhovewildlife @BH_Sparrows

When I was a kid, wherever you went in London, and sat down on a bench or wall, you'd see sparrows. It's only a guess but I think there can only be about four sparrows left in London.

Another productive and fun #sparrow nest box building session - this time at @DorothyStringer. The school is located right next to the area in #Brighton where sparrows appear to have gone extinct, so we really hope that pupils are successful with their nest boxes.

Oh dear another #sparrow roost chopped down in #Brighton for no apparent reason. This one is outside St. Nicholas Churchyard on Dyke Road - the hedge looked like it had only recently been trimmed!
Any comments @BrightonHoveCC @peterkyle @CarolineLucas ?

Researchers from the University of Sheffield believe noise could make #sparrow parents less attentive, possibly because they were unable to hear their chicks hunger cries.

I’ve always lived in flats. But no upstairs neighbour has ever said no to my suggestion of putting nest boxes up. We’re moving house soon but I wanted to leave the #sparrows with nesting options. Four woodcrete boxes going up today. East facing, under the eaves. (Thanks Jonas) 🐣

@Kate_Bradbury @BrightonHoveCC @btnhovewildlife @peterkyle @CarolineLucas However these images are worrying– why has all the grass been removed up the slope towards the main road- is it to strengthen the bank and will it remain barren?
Seems like grass is being removed and replaced with a loose stony aggregate. Will grass habitat be restored?

@Kate_Bradbury @BrightonHoveCC @btnhovewildlife @peterkyle @CarolineLucas Hove Lagoon was visited to see exactly how low council contractors had cut back this hedge. Relieved to see that although it had been reduced by half in places – it was certainly substantial enough to allow some cover. A few sparrows present but considerably reduced in number.
