I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. K. Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered.

He served ISRO with great diligence, steering India’s space programme to new heights, for which we also received global recognition. His leadership also witnessed ambitious satellite launches and focussed on innovation.

On April 23, 2025, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 people. The Indian Cabinet Committee on Security also ordered the closure of the Attari border and the cancellation of Pakistani visas under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme.

Signed in 1960, the IWT governs the distribution of six rivers between India and Pakistan. India controls the eastern rivers (Beas, Ravi, Sutlej), while Pakistan receives the western ones (Indus, Chenab, Jhelum), though India retains limited usage rights over the western rivers.

Impacts on Pakistan:

•Agriculture: 80% of Pakistan’s farmland depends on the Indus system. Reduced water flow threatens food security and economic stability.

•Water security: With limited storage capacity, Pakistan is vulnerable to any disruption in river flows.

•Economy and power: Hydropower and irrigation-dependent industries may suffer severe consequences.

India’s decision reflects both legal prudence and national interest. It underscores India’s commitment to treaties—tempered by the right to act when the other party persistently violates terms and endangers its security.
