“Vietnamese People Stand With Vietnamese People.”

This is a photo of what people have come to call the “Justice Tree Stump,” at 55 Nguyễn Huy Tự Street in Hanoi. This is also the spot where Đỗ Ngọc Phương Thùy, a young student, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by National Assembly Deputy Nguyễn Sỹ Cương on May 30, 2025.

More than a year has passed. People have continued calling for justice for Thùy, but their voices have repeatedly been drowned out. Many believe that the political influence surrounding the case has prevented the truth from receiving the attention it deserves.

Then, in April this year, another painful moment came for many Vietnamese people: Cương’s wife, Lâm Thị Phương Thanh, was appointed Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

For many, it was deeply disturbing to see someone connected to a case that has raised so many questions take responsibility for shaping the culture of an entire nation.

Things reached another breaking point in late July, when the Ministry of Culture came under criticism after music by rapper MCK was banned over what authorities considered sensitive content.

That was when a wave of public anger began spreading across Threads. And with it, Thùy’s story came back into the spotlight.

Millions of young Vietnamese people have since shared posts about Nguyễn Sỹ Cương and the case. Despite what many believe to be efforts to limit the spread of the story online, people continue to speak about it.

And now, this tree stump has become something much more than a piece of wood.

People are bringing flowers here for Thùy.

Each flower is a simple message:

“We remember you.”
“You have not been forgotten.”
“You are still one of us.”

If you are able to, please consider visiting this place and leaving a flower for Thùy—the young girl who never got the chance to step through the doors of university and begin the life she dreamed of.

Let her know that, even after all this time, there are still people who remember her.

I believe that kindness, compassion, and love for one another can eventually break through even the darkest times.

The sun will rise again.
