Illegal readers endlessly invent excuses to justify ignoring authors’ rights: the platform service is bad, it’s too expensive, the translation uses AI, there’s no simultaneous release, and so on.

Then they claim that if you really want to eliminate illegal translations, platforms should improve their services.

Of course, improving services for overseas readers is an urgent issue. However, saying this is necessary to reduce illegal translations has no factual basis and is not persuasive.

Illegal translations happen because of a lack of copyright awareness. There is no crime that occurs because the victim “didn’t try hard enough.” Do not look for the cause of crime in the victim. That only gives perpetrators excuses.

No genius can create a service system that satisfies 100% of customers. And it is impossible to translate Korean webtoons into all 7,000+ languages that exist in the world.

There is no webtoon in this world that is so essential that it justifies violating someone else’s rights or threatening their livelihood.

Platforms and authors desperately want to provide webtoons in more languages and more quickly. The ones preventing that are not platforms or authors, but illegal readers.

For the content industry to grow and thrive, the value of content must be protected and stabilized.

Please, before telling victims to try harder to avoid crime, tell the perpetrators to stop.
