Tulane baseball has been to Omaha. Twice, in 2001 and 2005.
The coach who got them there, Rick Jones, later said that first College World Series trip changed the program permanently: it opened recruiting to elite talent, doubled the season-ticket base, and helped build a new facility. Investment compounded into results. That’s not theory at Tulane. It’s history.
That was twenty years ago. This week, Troy reached its first College World Series. As a mid-major clearing a bar that keeps getting raised now that the scholarship cap has tripled to 34 and the richest programs set the terms.
Tulane, meanwhile, still funds baseball at roughly a third of that cap, even as rivals inside its own conference move toward fully funding the sport.
Jay Uhlman, in a radio interview this week, described a program getting by on outside money and tax-burdened financial aid which are workarounds that chip away at the one edge Tulane sells recruits: the value of the degree.
He said he wished it were as simple as having 34 scholarships. We all do.
The blueprint isn’t a mystery. Tulane drew it up itself. The only open question is whether the athletic department still wants to fund the thing it already proved it could build.
@Brett_McMurphy What people miss is that if you want big ratings and big money from TV contracts, you need to keep the fans of g5 schools fans engaged in the action, otherwise they’re going to walk away.
Baseball: Awkward moment in Clearwater. ECU beat UTSA once, they are 1-1 now. And they just handed ECU a trophy. TV was only ESPNews. So they can't even say it was TV's fault. Rough look for the league. Both teams belong in the Field.
@JJGREENWAVE@MrsHullabaloo Exactly. Don’t expect alumni to pay 15 more tuitions ($1.5 million a year).
Just give baseball 25 scholarships that’s ALL that’s needed.
The pic on the right is one of my all time favorite photos. You just had to be a part of that special group to really appreciate that season long accomplishment. Hard to believe it’s been ten years. To clinch in that ballpark made it that much sweeter. 🌊⚾️
