My Folks* being my loved ones #ButAlso other marginalized ppl living in jeopardy & proximity to harm
I don’t have anything for ppl threatening our communities & devaluing our lives when they experience hardship or loss not even thought & prayers
after thinking “what is wrong w/ people” I follow it with “what is right w/ people” to disrupt misanthropic narratives & sangry feelz
bc #CompassionFatigue is a thing, I actively withhold sympathetic/empathetic responses to harmful people to maintain space & spoons for My Folks*
I often remind myself that “people are horrible/I hate everyone” is a fundamentally right-wing narrative. It feeds the retributive impulses that dismantle social support systems and replace democratic representation with demagoguery. Compassion is hard, but it is resistance.
I think folks outside of academia don’t recognize this as a #PowerMove
Bc it’s more of an epic Eff Ewe to their school’s admin C19 policies
than about That One Student in That One Class
@jost_george@ParissAthena and yet I was able to grab these Cantonese/English cookbooks in Hong Kong on my way home from studying in mainland China
I’ve never visited another country where bookstores lacked a cookbook section
@ParissAthena I’ll see your bet and raise you spots with an all fusion menu - not a mix of A + B cuisine just a list of trendy foods
I don’t trust any kitchen putting out bulgogi tacos, chicken & waffles, Japanese curry, Nashville hot chicken pizza, & poutine in the same dinner service
@ClaudiaStellar Judo in the first hour we brought him home
Shelter staff said he was really good & didn’t destroy toys … turns out he only wreaks his own stuff lol
@kailovesjjong@NussbaumAbigail And I’m completely okay with anyone who can’t relate cos #NothingIsUniversal
Dis/liking Cather is an intergenerational bond, Salinger got mixed reviews at the time & convo has always been contentious - I’m jealous of ppl who never had to read it … or herd of it
@_jessycarenee They’re a future family heirloom!
Like 21st c Tiffany or bone china, but more elegant (and durable)
I’m excited for every other BW carrying on Ms. Estelle’s legacy of being classy while boozing
All that makes Holden’s “bad behavior” + sadness empathetic & relatable
Cos who among us have experienced loss or trauma w/o
becoming an edge-lord
while failing out of prep school
then going on a weekend bender in NYC
before our parents recognize we’re struggling & intervene ?
Catcher discourse is exhausting bc its its about in/validating a boring yt kid w a sad as a relatable (yt teen) archetype that doesn’t even consider Holden’s points of privilege as reasons *most of us* did not & will never experience
Holden’s physical, social, emotional abuse is attributed to grief
w/o challenging
His response to being vulnerable is using his own points privilege to be violent with other vulnerable, designated victims
which is a feature of yt supremacy
Making Salinger’s writing “realistic”
@NussbaumAbigail I also read it in the ‘90s in HS english as a 2nd gen Black girl attending an all girl Catholic HS run by Irish nuns I saw that Holden was suffering & acting out
I couldn’t relate bc if I acted out my Black ass would have been criminalized not medicalized like mediocre yt guy
