So we have to talk about this pattern, which is all it is right now. Plenty of cold air and a deep trough mean a coastal low could develop Saturday into Sunday. Too early for specifics, but yes, it's a favorable pattern for winter weather in the Southeast somewhere. Nothing like this past weekend, and likely more of a snow or no snow kinda thing. This graphic is a perfect example of why snow expectations and reality don’t always line up 👀❄️

From left to right, this is what we’re really talking about with most “snow chances” around here:

TRACE → You might see flakes flying, maybe a few white specks on the grass, but many spots stay completely green.
DUSTING to 0.5" → This is your classic Carolina snow look. Grass, rooftops, decks, cars, and mulch turn white… but roads? Still just wet.
1"+ of snow → Now it finally looks like winter. Lawns are solidly covered, elevated surfaces stack up nicely, and you get that true “snow day vibe.”

And this is the key part 👇
Most accumulation happens on grass and elevated surfaces, not roads. Ground temps, treated pavement, and marginal air temps make it very hard for snow to stick on streets unless rates are heavy or temps are well below freezing.

So when we’re talking about trace amounts or a dusting, don’t expect a winter wonderland — expect novelty flakes, a light coating in spots, and no travel issues.

Matching expectations to reality keeps the forecast honest and the hype in check. ❄️
