you not black first. or a woman first. you’re a black woman. that’s it. your experience with misogyny is unique because of racism. your experience with racism is different because you’re a woman. the term ‘intersectionality’ exists because our experience is so unique.
Olandria on the Omnicom panel:
“Authenticity does not mean you have to share everything. Don’t get me wrong, I humanize every part of my story. I never just share the good because no one’s life is all rainbows, right? If I only shared the good, I wouldn’t have the big support system that I have. I tell them the ugly parts of my story — how I got through college, how I had to fight my way to financially provide for myself to get that degree, because I’m a first-generation college student. I’m the first person in my family to even graduate high school. I’ve been paving the way for a very long time, and I’m continuing to do that. But when it comes to authenticity, I try to protect what’s mine. Anything that I can protect and have sacred means the most to me. Authenticity does not always mean you have to share all parts of you. There are a lot of things that people still don’t know, and maybe I’ll come out one day and decide to share those parts of me, but right now, I’m going to keep them safe.”
