On July 14, 1970, Puerto Rican+Black activists—known as the Young Lords—took over Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx.
They were fed up w/ disinvestment, racism, substandard healthcare.
Working class ppl have always galvanized this city!
This reminds me of those high schools where as soon as the valedictorian is POC or woman, they break with tradition and decide to have co-valedictorians for the first time in the school’s history. Please don’t do this.
William Gould (seated) liberated himself from slavery in North Carolina during the Civil War and fought for the freedom of others as a member of the United States armed forces. All six of his sons served in the US military in the 20th century.
