A U.S. citizen was left bloodied and injured after immigration agents mistook him for a fugitive in Evanston, Illinois, according to local police.

Police said agents tried to handcuff the man after he refused to provide identification. They released him after determining he was not the person they were seeking. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries to his head, neck and teeth.

In a statement to CBS News, the Department of Homeland Security said that "ICE encountered an individual who resembled the target. ICE approached the individual and immediately identified themselves as law enforcement. The individual was given lawful commands but was not cooperative and refused to identify himself. ICE officers relied on their training and later left the scene without further incident once the individual finally identified himself."

One woman remains on a ventilator after her family says she suffered a brain injury on the ride in July. Another rider says he underwent two brain surgeries to stop internal bleeding.

Update to yesterday’s fatal shooting on Ella Blvd:

The teen who was killed has been identified as 15-year-old Royce Witchet. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Royce’s family, friends, classmates, and all who are grieving his loss.

Today, a 14-year-old male was taken into custody in connection with Royce’s shooting. The teen is also believed to be a student in Spring ISD.

This is a heartbreaking situation. One young life has been lost, another young person is now in custody, and two families and an entire community are left dealing with the consequences.

Our investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be shared as appropriate.
