A journalist today, asked about why New Zealand doesn’t have a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) at the presser today.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon responded that his government doesn’t think a CGT is appropriate for New Zealand and feels strongly about it.

He described introducing one now as a “wrecking ball” for the economy, especially while recovery is underway.

This exchange drew attention, with Albanese appearing somewhat rattled or trying to downplay/laugh it off amid recent Australian CGT changes.

It was framed as a “cheeky” jab highlighting policy differences between the two countries.

Luxon’s government has consistently opposed a broad CGT, aligning with their stance against new taxes in the current term and emphasis on growth/fiscal repair.
