Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) hosted a meeting on Oct 2, 2024, organized by the Malawi Surveillance Network (MSuN). Biomedical scientists & traditional healers discussed collaboration to detect emerging infections & strengthen pandemic preparedness.

Under the supervision of Dr. Gama Bandawe, they presented their work on the Isolation of Bacteriophages to Streptococcus Pneumoniae—a study pushing boundaries in microbial research, taking home the Best Poster Presentation award. Congratulations to this outstanding team.
Our final-year Medical Microbiology students Patricia Banda, Bertha Manyela, and Shalom Phariwa showcased their research at the KUHeS Research Dissemination Conference, held at Amaryllis Hotel on Friday, October 4, 2024.

Dr. Gama Bandawe engaged clinical, nursing, and lab teams at Partners In Hope Clinic in Lilongwe on the NIH-funded MPIRA Study, which uses next-gen sequencing to explore respiratory illnesses in children across urban and rural Malawi.

On 29th August 2024, the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) held a training workshop in Blantyre. Dr. Chanunkha from BISCH was the guest speaker, and Dr. Madanitsa, the Executive Dean for AMS, led the school meeting. We concluded by celebrating recent staff birthdays.

On Tuesday, Prof Lodish gave a lecture on gene editing technologies for sickle cell disease to our immunology and medical microbiology students. He then shared his experience starting biotech companies in a public lecture. We learned so much. What a legend.
It has been a great pleasure to welcome Prof Harvey Lodish to @mustmalawi. He had great discussions with our VC Prof Address Malata on Monday. This was followed by some incredible lectures and interaction with undergraduate and postgraduate students from @BioMUST
