He pledged about $100 million in 1998; the final gift was about $104 million. The arena opened in October 2001. An earlier campus rink had already been renamed for him in 1988.The Nazi issue is documented, not rumor:He kept a private “war room” at the Imperial Palace full of Third Reich memorabilia: Nazi flags, uniforms, weapons, propaganda, and cars linked to Hitler and other Axis leaders. He hosted parties on Hitler’s birthday (April 20) in 1986 and 1988, with German food and, by multiple accounts, a swastika-decorated cake. Reporting at the time also described a painting of him in a Nazi uniform and “Hitler Was Right” bumper stickers. Nevada gaming regulators fined him $1.5 million in 1989 for damaging the state’s image by glorifying Hitler. He denied being a Nazi, called the parties a stupid “spoof” or theme event for employees who restored the cars, said he despised Hitler, and offered the collection to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
