Cuba’s infant mortality rate has risen from 4 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 9 in 2025, a 148% increase, according to a new report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. The report concludes that the primary driver is the dramatic tightening of US sanctions since 2017, compounded by Trump’s current fuel blockade, described as “by far the most damaging US unilateral measure imposed to date”.

While every comparable country in the region saw declining or stable rates over the same period, Cuba's increase in its infant mortality rate is the latest indicator of the human consequences of US sanctions.
