I have a theory that I have harbored for quite some time … Jeff Luhnow the former GM of the Astros was really “the smart guy” behind the early 00’s Cardinals.

Mozeliak was promoted to GM and Luhnow was pissed so he left.

Since he has exited the Cardinals org (2011), the Astros have won 2 WS and the Cardinals have regressed to a middle of the road organization and gotten rid of a whole host of players who went on to productive MLB careers elsewhere.
