The appeal of holding an NFT is that you essentially own a piece of the project’s equity. This is marketed as the web3 equivalent of a stock.
My question is this: What happens when NFT projects inevitably pursue traditional funding? 🧵
2022 will be defined by infrastructure players diversifying their product offerings downstream.
Wouldn’t be surprised if exchanges started offering more robust wallets, marketplaces, staking, etc. to capture a larger share of value from the web3 consumer’s journey.
It’s fascinating how many of the top NFT collections are built on memes.
BAYC was built on the trend of aping into meme stocks during COVID-19.
mfers is built on the “are you winning son” meme. Won’t be surprised if floor reaches and maintains 5 ETH.
If you’re building an NFT project with no technical innovation, storytelling, or legitimate utility (not talking merch / events), just build a meme collection.
Way better chance of going the distance than the 99th 3D art project with zero vision set to launch this week.
So, this begs the question: is an NFT a share in a project, or just a profile pic with a few cool uses cases left to rot after the founders have had their fun?
If there’s no fiduciary duty, it isn’t investing. This space deserves better.
If you still don’t think anonymous founders are problematic after seeing the creator of one of the biggest NFT projects get exposed for being a serial rug puller, I don’t know what to tell you.
Let’s compare to a public company.
The “everything promised” is essentially 12 months of mgmt projections. If mgmt up and left after delivering a year of performance with the entirety of their retained earnings, there would be legal proceedings.
