This is an important moment.

Like most people, I was excited this morning when I saw headlines that read:

“GTA 6 Preorder Details Released.”

I was expecting the $79.99 price tag that sublimely nudges buying the next tier release but what I wasn’t expecting is the complete lack of a physical release, especially at launch.

This is a really big (and for a lot of us) old news kind of deal when it comes to what “ownership” means in this digital era.

As a person who has collected consoles and games for decades, it’s sad to see video games go the same way music and movies have gone.

Right now if you access them via any digital platform, you do not own your music and you do not own your video games.

I don’t think physical media will ever completely disappear, but what this represents is the first widespread acceptance of digital distribution and license-based ownership no longer being seen as an alternative.

What I’m waiting for is a digital trade in market to hit consoles, that’s when things will move faster than ever.

I wonder how much longer GameStop will survive….
