Sure, Jesus didn’t strut around in a Roman collar or a pointy hat. That’s irrelevant. He wasn’t starting a clergy fashion trend, He was establishing the Church, which includes roles for specific types of service. The Apostles weren't just indistinct believers blending into the crowd—they were set apart with authority (Matthew 16:18-19, John 20:22-23). And yes, we are all part of the "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9), but that doesn't flatten out the hierarchy that Christ clearly established. If "priesthood of all believers" meant no distinction of roles, why did Christ bother giving Peter and the Apostles unique powers? Seems like a curious waste of time.

Now, about clothing: Jesus was a faithful Jew, and He respected the traditions and symbols of authority that came with it (Matthew 23:2-3). Even in the New Testament, we see that the Church retained elements of structure and authority (Hebrews 13:17). Special clothing, over time, became a sign of the sacred office, not some indulgence in vanity. And while clothes don’t define the man, symbols do matter—unless you want to tell a police officer that their badge is an "unhealthy accretion" and they should just wear casual clothes like everyone else.

The Old Covenant’s priestly vestments prefigure the New Covenant’s authority (Exodus 28, Isaiah 61:10). Just because the priesthood widened doesn't mean distinctions vanished. The Church doesn’t diminish the priesthood of all believers with vestments—it highlights Christ’s choice to work through both the priesthood and a priesthood.
