Judge: “You stole the car?”
Teenager: “Yes, Your Honor.”
Judge: “Why?”
Teenager: “My friends dared me to.”
Judge: “And you wanted to impress them?”
Teenager: “Yes.”
Judge: “Did you know whose car it was?”
Teenager: “No.”
Judge: “Did you know the car was damaged?”
Teenager: “I knew it got damaged.”
Judge: “The repairs cost $4,800.”
The teenager looked down.
Teenager: “I’m sorry.”
His mother stood.
Mother: “Your Honor, we’ll pay for everything.”
The judge looked at her.
Judge: “I understand.”
Mother: “We don’t want the victim waiting for her money because of something our son did.”
Judge: “That’s responsible.”
She nodded.
Then the judge looked at the teenager.
Judge: “Do you know what that car was used for?”
