The Dewey family cat, who died in 1910, meant enough to his owner to be honored with a gravestone that stands today, over 113 years later. It reads: "He was only a cat, but he was human enough to be a great comfort in hours of loneliness and pain."
On this day 1793 Gilbert White died aged just short of 73 years old.
He is remembered today as the father of ecology and an inspiration to all those who love the natural world.
To the people accusing naturalist’s of ‘doom mongering’ by reporting a lack of insects, birds, steady rain etc this spring, please understand that we are only telling the truth. None of us want to be see our flora & fauna struggling, but it is, and love compels us to call it out.

I love that our minds can take something as ordinary as sea snail shells, and translate our observation of them into awe. The variety of colours in Flat Periwinkles! Buttercups, marmalades, rusts and olives! Aren’t they gorgeous?
It has taken a while to work this out but, finally, the purpose of ear tufts is clear. They’re a rest for the tail so it functions better as a wind break.
Quick tip to any children’s authors about to do their first school visits. If one of the questions is ‘how old are you?’ (and I guarantee it will be) don’t ever reply with ‘how old do you *think* I am?’
