Troye Sivan channeling Robert Mapplethorpe at the Met Gala is a fashion reference that most people in that room probably dont get but the ones who do will appreciate it because Mapplethorpe was one of the most provocative and important photographers in art history. choosing to channel a queer artist known for pushing boundaries at an event themed fashion is art shows Troye actually engaged with the theme instead of just wearing an expensive outfit which puts him ahead of 90 percent of the people on that carpet. Troye Sivan consistently being one of the most thoughtful dressers at the Met Gala is underappreciated because he doesnt generate the same viral moments as Rihanna or Beyonce but his choices demonstrate a genuine understanding of fashion history that deserves more credit. the Mapplethorpe reference is bold because it invokes an artist whose work was simultaneously celebrated and censored and wearing that influence on the Met Gala carpet is a statement about queer art being recognized at the highest level of mainstream fashion
