I love K-State and get to visit multiple times a year because of the ag connection, but I still can’t figure out what I did to deserve this guy constantly showing up in my algorithm. Every school has that one fan who spends more time obsessing over other programs than supporting his own.

That’s a pretty emotional take, but it ignores how the cattle industry actually works.

Without feedlots, there is zero chance the U.S. could meet beef demand. Land, time, and seasonal limitations make it impossible to supply a consistent, affordable product nationwide. Feedlots exist because they are efficient, not because people don’t care about cattle.

There’s also a layer here people don’t like to talk about. Economics. Finishing cattle, whether in a feedlot or otherwise, is where much of the value is captured in the beef chain. It’s easy to criticize that from the outside, but it’s also why those operations exist. If it wasn’t profitable or necessary, it wouldn’t be a cornerstone of the industry.

And let’s be honest. Agriculture loves to present itself as purely “stewards of the land,” which is true, but incomplete. It’s also a business. Always has been. Ranchers, feeders, processors, everyone in the chain is balancing stewardship with profitability. Pretending profit is somehow immoral while still participating in the system is a bit hypocritical.

@NebGradDubDub @AustinRiediger Most of the time the frustration is taken out on the seed companies, when it always comes back to the traits. Whether it’s cotton or beans, the trait providers want their trait royalties.

Trait depts typically are ran separate from the seed production side of the business.
