Honoring Our Healing: Mental Health Awareness Month in the Black Community
By Dr. Tamara Thornhill, LPC, Clinician & Mental Health Advocate
Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to shine a light on a subject too often left in the shadows especially within the Black community.
As a clinician, I see firsthand how systemic barriers, cultural stigma, and lack of access to affirming care impact our ability to heal. Many of us are taught to "pray it away" or to push through pain without acknowledgment. But silence isn’t strength and mental health is health.
Our community has endured generations of trauma, yet we continue to show up, provide, and push forward. But it’s time we give ourselves permission to slow down and seek support. Prioritizing our mental well-being is not selfish, it's necessary.
This month and beyond, I encourage us to normalize conversations around therapy, self-care, and emotional rest. Let’s check in on one another, challenge the stigma, and remind ourselves that healing is not a destination, it's a journey.
You deserve peace. You deserve to be heard. You deserve to heal.

the way it SHOULD be. | #BlackHistoryMonth

As we wrap up this month, what better way to celebrate than by adding another powerhouse to The Last Lecture - Season 4! Meet @AkasandraL, a Ugandan now living in London who transformed her counseling degree from Uganda into a seat at the NHS in the UK. It’s the classic “started from the bottom, now we’re here”—with a twist!
Sandra’s talk, "Beyond Borders: Navigating the Path to International Education and Success," promises to be a no-holds-barred look at the realities of studying and thriving abroad. With a track record of helping Ugandans secure spots in European universities, she’s like the fairy godmother of the UK student visa (minus the magic wand, unfortunately).
This is just the extra spice our lineup needed. Ready for the real talk on success beyond borders? Trust us, you don’t want to miss Sandra’s story.
