And they weren’t the only club punished. Fiorentina and Lazio were initially relegated too, while AC Milan received a points deduction for their involvement in the case.

So if Manchester City are eventually found liable for the charges against them, why would football suddenly collapse if the authorities imposed a massive sporting punishment?

60 point deduction over 5 years,
Relegation to the third tier,
Titles stripped.
Whatever sanction is ultimately imposed, the principle should be the same, the size of the club should not determine the seriousness of the punishment.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has issued a new statement on the Manchester City case.

The statement has come via a 10 Downing Street spokesperson and said: "As the Prime Minister made clear, the initial judgement is serious and there can’t be any suggestion that anyone is above the rules.

He also stressed that it is an ongoing independent process. It is essential that it is allowed to run its course and the outcome respected.

Wherever wrongdoing is established, those responsible should face the appropriate consequences."
