Long ago, there were people who sent anonymous poison pen letters to those they took a dislike to. That required some effort: putting the letter into an envelope, possibly adding a stamp, and taking it to a letter box. Now they have social media and their lives are much easier.

Tom Nichols: Trump, like all bullies, is a deeply insecure man. He admires successful bullies, but fears them at the same time.

When it comes to these authoritarians, he’s afraid of them, but God, he respects them, and just wishes he could be like them.

He really admires Putin, but fears him at the same time, so he tries to ingratiate himself.

He admires Kim Jong Un, but is intimidated by him at the same time. So again, he tries to be ingratiating.

You can always see Trump standing there, patting arms and trying to do the handshakes.

And so I’ve never understood how Trump’s people think of him as strong and manly.

To me, all his body language, all his expressions, and the way he talks project fear and insecurity.

And so when Trump gets mad, he lashes out and punches our allies, because he thinks those are the other guys in the gang who just have to take it.

An 18-year-old girl, completely covered in a burqa and sunglasses, sits before Abdullah Sarhadi, the Taliban Governor of the Jawzjan province, and calmly begs for a divorce from the husband who beats her.

“If there was any chance to live together, I wouldn’t be here… I have taken my decision.”

He refuses to grant the divorce and tells her she must stay in the physically abusive relationship. She will lose her “dignity and honor,” he tells her, if she divorced.

Then, to the approving laughter of the men around him, he declares that women are “deficient in intellect,” “mindless,” and “don’t know a thing.”

No rights. No escape. Just contempt and subjected to the total control of men steeped in a medieval philosophy.
And still the world looks away.
