Change to the 35% max rule
* Player is eligible to still receive 35% of the salary cap if 10 years of service (Donovan Mitchell) or has reached the All-NBA criteria (Tatum SGA, Brown)
* However, if the player was drafted or traded within the first 4 years in the NBA (SGA for example), only 30% of the salary applies to the cap.
* In the case of Jaylen Brown, $48.9M this season and not $57M applies
The rule is a bigger version of what applies already with the veteran minimum exception.
A player with 10 years of service + signs a contract for $3.9M.
However, for cap purposes only $2.45M applies (2 years of service)
BREAKING: Cleveland Cavaliers All-NBA star Donovan Mitchell has agreed on a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker, CAA's Co-Head of Basketball, Austin Brown, tells ESPN.
Celtics owner Bill Chisholm on Jaylen Brown trade: "[This is] not about the money at all. This was trying to put together the right players and assets to win... I know people feel like there must be a smoking gun somewhere around the money. That is just not what this is about."
George joins a list of players including James Harden, Jalen Green, Anthony Davis, Kyle Kuzma and Harrison Barnes that have eliminated or reduced the trade bonus in their contract.
Kings post DeMar DeRozan
Includes his $10M salary for 2026-27
Sacramento is $1.8M above the luxury tax
They have $3.85M in unlikely bonuses counting against the apron
DeRozan’s $25.7M salary was guaranteed for $10M.
Sacramento has until the end of August to waive-and-stretch the amount over 3 seasons.
The waiver will push Sacramento below both aprons.
Just in: The Sacramento Kings are waiving DeMar DeRozan, making the six-time All-Star one of the top free agents, sources tell ESPN. The sides worked collaboratively on this resolution after exploring trade routes.
LeBron James knew for over a week that he was ready to move on from the Lakers. There’s was no reason to meet in person or virtually. The only difficulty was finding a place in the no-phone zone at Wimbledon for Rich Paul to place the call letting them know…

The difference in years and salary is a result of the six-month extension restriction for players traded.
The opt-in scenario (last one), maximizes the most earning power (an extra $1M).
Now that the Giannis trade has become official, below are the extension options:
As of 10/1
*⃣If 27-28 option declined: 3 years/$193M
*⃣if 27-28 option exercised: 2 years/$135M
As of 1/6
*⃣If 27-28 option declined: 4 years/$275M
*⃣If 27-28 option exercised: 3 years/$214M

Sign-and-trade would have created a trade exception for the Lakers.
However....
The exception would have been renounced in order for the Lakers to user their room in free agency.
Hachimira and his agent Darren Matsubara of THE•TEAM came to an understanding with the Clippers early in free agency on finding a deal together. The sides waited for the Lakers to complete their offseason business to pursue a sign-and-trade, but the Lakers didn’t cooperate on an agreement. So the Clippers and Hachimura moved forward to keep him in his desired location of LA.
Since the CBA started in 2023, 98 players have extended their contract.
Total= $10.7 billion in new money
Average per year= 33
Out of the extensions, only 3 players have signed super max extensions (Brown, Tatum, SGA)

“You can’t make sense of it other than they had to do something. … They couldn’t bring him back.”

Memphis roster: Pre offer sheet
The likelihood is the Isaiah Stewart trade from Detroit and Santi Aldama trade to Dallas is tied into 1.
That would preserve part of the $15m non tax midlevel exception to use for the Quinten Post offer sheet.
Golden State roster
This does not factor in a new contract for Draymond
Based on their finances, tough to see Golden State matching the offer sheet and having flexibility to remain below the second apron.
