Norm Macdonald was the absolute master of being hilariously inappropriate in settings where everyone else was playing it straight. His appearance on The Larry Sanders Show is a perfect example of his timing and ability to completely derail a "serious" celebrity interview with the most absurd, uncomfortable, and dry observations.

The way he manages to turn a conversation about homelessness into a bizarre, wandering bit about a dog is genius. He knew exactly how to make the other guests and the host, Garry Shandling, visibly squirm.

Norm: "I see one guy there the other day in New York... had a dog with him. And that's tough. Do you feel sorry for the... for the dog, you know?"

You really couldn't write comedy this dry; he was just on another level.

In 1996, a King Penguin called Lala became a local celebrity in Shibushi, Japan. After being rescued from a fishing net by the Nishimoto family, he refused to return to the wild.

He lived in an air-conditioned room in their home and was famous for walking alone to the fish market wearing a tiny backpack.

The fishmonger would feed him a fresh fish and place another in his bag for the trip home.
