NOW AVAILABLE: EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN BREVIARY
Last week I announced the launch of ELB, a supplement to the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary of the ELS focused on the Divine Office. Here's a quick overview of the book and its contents.

@benjamindcrosby I don't have a source for it atm, but I believe incense was retained in one German congregation well into the 1700s because it was located next door to a slaughterhouse!
So the Norwegian Synod added one! Imo it would have been more fitting before the Kyrie, but it still works. Here's an interesting chat comparing Norwegian liturgies over time:

One of my favorite parts of the Bugenhagen Rite in the ELS hymnal is the Kyrie. It feels almost like a medieval troped Kyrie (which Trent prohibited!), without the length of "Kyrie, God Father in Heaven Above."
I'm not a huge fan of its placement between Confession and Absolution, but that's an interesting bit of history. The newly reformed (1889) rite lacked an absolution so as not to offend certain groups who were opposed to absolution as an actual impartation of forgiveness.
Rite I in the ELH, affectionately known as the "Bugenhagen Rite" which reflects such distinctives such as the Opening and Closing Prayers and Apostolic Benediction following the Prayer of the Church.

If you haven't heard the second tune for Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior in ELH (to be sung in alternation), drop what you're doing, give it a listen, and sing along. Hauntingly beautiful and hits so hard.
@Daniel_Ross622 There's a Norwegian custom that the baptism of our Lord is celebrated instead of Quinquagesima, which I'm not entirely sure how I feel about, but it does make that connection quite strongly.
