When @emmma_camp_ moved to New York, she started watching “Girls” on HBO. As a writer for @wsjfreeex, Emma sees herself as someone who can lead her generation out of a permanent state of adolescence.

@arne__ness@RedGreenBC People have this weird idea that every peasant in the Middle Ages was just barely scraping out a living, instead of a range with the upper portion enjoying fairly decent lives
Kurt Wagner (not Nightcrawler) should be spoken about with the same reverence given to Berman and Bill Callahan etc. The new Lambchop record may be the most beautiful album he’s ever made.
Syracuse is in trouble. They borrowed a half billion dollars to build new dorms and now enrollment is sliding.
“The problem with Syracuse is that the school thinks of itself as like an Ivy, but it’s not,” Tavares said.
Syracuse is a sad case. Trump made it harder to get international students who pay the most for tuition, it’s in a car dependent city, it’s frozen and miserable for 4-5 months of the year, etc. I’ve actually heard from some faculty that one way they sell the school to graduate students is by touring nearby Wegmans lol. So many universities are going to close soon.
lol. Those huge tech companies that structure your lives? That politicians bend over backward to accommodate? Who control absurd sums of capital? Not mainstream and totally punk
The ethos of punk is DIY - can’t sing? Yell. Only know two chords? That’s the whole song. Can’t dance? Pogo. Punk and grunge that came from it were about independent art that didn’t care if the mainstream approved. In fact they were embarrassed once they became mainstream. AI artists will no doubt produce the same cultural chaos because we are an uncontrollable decentralised unknown quantity who don’t give a fuck. We were forged in sneering and ridicule just like the punks.
A data center is almost comically tame as industry goes. No smokestacks. No ore piles. No molten steel. No freight trains of coal. Mostly a very large box containing computers, electrical equipment, cooling systems, and an expensive humming noise. And even this is apparently too industrial for us.
