A brutal assault on a husband and wife on a farm in the Uitkyk area has left the community in shock.A 73-year-old pensioner narrowly escaped with his life after a brutal attack that left him with severe head trauma.

Jan Jurgens (73) and his wife, Antoinette (72), live on a farm along the Uitkyk Road. On Monday, May 12, at around 18:45, Jan was in a storeroom fetching animal feed when at least two robbers attacked him.Among other injuries, he was hacked with a panga and repeatedly struck in the face and on the head with a rock.

His farm dogs rushed to defend him, but the attackers turned on them as well, slashing at them with the panga.

One of the dogs, a Labrador, suffered deep lacerations and is still being treated at a local veterinarian clinic.“The assault was so severe that my father lost consciousness,” his son, Jannie, told Lowvelder.

The robbers tied Jan’s hands and feet with shoelaces.

“Every time he regained consciousness, they would either kick him or jump on him,”

Antoinette was not at home at the time.

“When Mum arrived home at around 19:00, the two men attacked her as well. However, she fought them off and managed to lock herself in the house,” Jannie explained.

She called for help and staff living on the farm rushed to her aid. The assailants fled the scene on foot.

When the first responders, including Theo Laas and his reaction officers of ACS Spartan Security, arrived at the farm, they initially could not locate Jan. He was later found unconscious in the storeroom.

“He was severely injured and struggling to breathe due to the trauma to his face. One of the residents of Renosterkop valley rushed him to a hospital,” Jannie said.
