Eighteen players sit within one shot of the lead at Hogan's Colonial after Round 1, the kind of crowded board you get when a precision course rewards the morning wave and the afternoon wave in equal measure. Six players matched 64s to share the top at 6 under: Ryan Gerard and Andrew Putnam set the target from the morning, J.J. Spaun, Matt McCarty, and Lee Hodges caught them in the afternoon, and Tom Kim arrived via the long way. Kim was alone in front at 7 under through 13 before giving a shot back over the closing stretch to join the tie.

Notable Names:

Tom Kim (-6): The story of Round 1. Kim owned the outright lead at 7 under through 13 holes with five to play. One drop on the closing stretch wiped the gap, and a player who looked like he was running away ends Thursday sharing the front of the line with five others. The opportunity is still there. Kim has 18 more holes Friday to put air between himself and the chase pack and lead the field into the weekend.

Ryan Gerard (-6): A 64 in the morning wave to set the target. Gerard held the early position through the heat of the day and never gave it back. The chase pack found him, not the other way around. Round 2 is his first chance to test if the morning wave magic transfers to a Friday tee time.

Andrew Putnam (-6): Matched Gerard's morning 64. Two morning wave veterans share T1 entering Friday.

J.J. Spaun (-6): Climbed into the tie from 5 under through 11 in the afternoon wave. A late burst put him on the lead line for Friday. Spaun has worked into top tens in 2026, and Colonial's tight corridors suit a player who lives off the fairway.

Matt McCarty (-6): Among the six 64s. McCarty is a name that has not lived on the top of a Tour board often. Round 2 will tell us if he can stay there.

Lee Hodges (-6): The sixth player at 6 under after a 64. Hodges joins the lead group for the first time in a few seasons.

Keegan Bradley (-5): The US Ryder Cup captain sits one back at 5 under after a 65. Bradley is in playing shape, which matters for September. Colonial is exactly the kind of test he wants to be on at this point in the year.

Brian Harman (-5): The 2023 Open champion at 5 under. Harman's precision off the tee is built for Colonial's narrow corridors. A 65 to open the week.

Alex Smalley (-5): Two weeks removed from a T2 at the PGA Championship at Aronimink, Smalley opened with a 65 at Colonial. The form from major season is still here. T7 entering Round 2.

Aaron Rai wins the 108th PGA Championship with a closing 65, posting five under Sunday from a starting position of 4 under to finish at 9 under par and three clear of the field. Alex Smalley, the 54 hole solo leader, shot a closing 72 to slip from the top spot and finish tied for second at 6 under alongside Jon Rahm.
