I agree that nations that prioritize education must invest heavily in it. Strong education systems are rarely built by students alone; they require sustained investment in infrastructure, research, faculty development, and student support.

My point is not that governments should shift the burden to students. In fact, governments have a responsibility to create pathways that make quality education accessible.

However, we also need to be realistic about the cost of maintaining quality. The conversation should include both increasing public investment and building sustainable funding models that ensure institutions can deliver world-class education.

The ultimate goal should be a system where a student’s financial background does not determine their access to quality education.

Who you walk with during application season matters just as much as your credentials.

Negative company will tell you fully funded offers are out of reach, laugh at your big dreams, and question why you are putting in so much effort.

You need peers who understand the sacrifice, push you to meet deadlines, and keep you grounded until you land that funded offer.

This is why having something like the Scholarships Cafe community in your corner makes all the difference.

Distance yourself from doubt and build with people going where you want to go.

Growing up, my dad was an Economics teacher in a government secondary school.

One thing that man would preach everywhere was EDUCATION! 😭😂

Any parent he met, he would admonish them to prioritize their children’s education.

When he eventually started his own private secondary school (the first private in my town) the preaching became even louder:

“Education will take you places.”

The funny thing is, he never really showed me anybody who had gone to those “places” through education. 😂 I didn’t have examples around me. I just believed him.

Many years later, I think my own life has proven that my dad was right.

Education has taken me to countries I never imagined I would visit, opened doors I didn’t even know existed, and put me in rooms nobody around me had ever been in while I was growing up.

Sometimes I just wish that man were still here to see it.

Dad, you were right. Education truly takes people places. ❤️🥹
