When He Says He Can’t Watch Her Push

Dear Mekzy my bro,

Your concerns are valid o... very valid!

This brought back memories of a muscular husband who almost fainted at child birth during one of my shifts 😃

See this video of childbirth, the woman writhing, pushing, groaning, summoning life with every ounce of her being.

Seeing this comment made me smile. Because he is right. Childbirth is not a joke. It is both brutal and beautiful. It is a symphony where pain becomes purpose, where cries dissolve into the first wail of life, where love stretches literally and metaphorically, beyond itself.

But here’s what we need to know: companionship shortens pain. It steadies the storm. Studies have shown that women who are supported during labour, whether by a partner, sister, mother, or friend often experience shorter first and second stages of delivery. Because the body listens to love. The hormones respond to safety. The cervix, too, blooms in the presence of care.

So yes, dear brother, your presence can make a difference. Your hand in hers can anchor her breath. Your voice, trembling as it may be, can remind her she is not alone.

And yet, and this is where truth must stand with tenderness, not every man can endure that theatre of pain. And that is perfectly fine. We need only one patient in the labour room. Not two.

Because fainting beside your wife as her baby crowns is not the show of strength she needs. And we, the doctors, would rather focus on her contractions than on reviving you with smelling salts of liquor hands.

Dear women, be kind to your men. If he says, 'I cannot bear to see you in that kind of pain,'... it doesn’t mean he loves you less. Sometimes, it means his love trembles. Sometimes, it means his heart bruises easily.

He can still love you from the waiting room, pacing, praying, panicking with purpose. And that too, is love.

And if he’s brave enough to stay through a Caesarean section holding your hand, whispering courage... wonderful. But if he’s the type who swoons at the sight of blood, dear brother, for the love of medicine, tell us before we have two emergencies.

At the end of it all, childbirth is not a test of masculinity. It is a test of humanity. Some men hold the hand. Some hold the space. Some hold their breath outside the door.

And all of it, every trembling, tender bit of it... is love. ❤️
