Not a great analogy but I hear her.
Back in the day it was easier for women to submit because they didn't really have a choice and marriage was basically the only way to be โsecureโ. We shouldn't kid ourselves that it was unconditional love. It was conditional then too. The system just made the conditions for them.
Remove that dependency and you find out what was choice and what was constraint. That's where we are now. Women are educated, they're working, a lot of them earn more than us. Of course their view of marriage has changed.
Rami's right that men need to raise the bar. But if the bar is only about providing, a lot of us won't clear it as women keep moving up. It has to be about who you are as a man. How mature you are, how steady you are, how you show up when things are falling apart. You can bring that whether or not you earn more than her.
And I don't think relationships are transactional. They're reciprocal. A transaction falls apart the minute one person can't pay. Reciprocal means sometimes you carry her, sometimes she carries you. When you get there it's less about who submits to who and more about respecting each other.
Esethu: the first thing that the court will ask for is pictures to show that you celebrated the marriage. It was never celebrated.
