UPS TEAMSTER RETIRES AFTER 55 YEARS BEHIND THE WHEEL
Leon “Smiley” Davis, a UPS feeder driver out of Teamsters Local 891 in Jackson, Miss., is celebrating his long-earned retirement after 55 years as a dedicated UPS Teamster.
Davis has proudly worn the Teamsters horseheads and the UPS shield since 1971, having delivered packages across more than 7.6 million miles behind the wheel of his UPS rig.
Having completed more than 50 years of safe driving, Davis is looking forward to a well-funded and secure Teamsters retirement with his three children and wife of 53 years. When he began his UPS career more than five decades ago, “Smiley” — as he is affectionately known among his fellow Teamsters — was UPS's first African-American feeder driver hired at his Jackson facility.
“Smiley Davis exemplifies the Teamsters spirit — commitment to performing a job well done and a lifetime of service to your co-workers and Teamsters family,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “More than 300,000 hardworking UPS Teamsters celebrate this milestone with our brother in Jackson, and the entire Teamsters Union nationwide thanks him for his labor and love. Smiley is truly a Teamster for life."
Elected representatives from Local 891 and leadership from the Teamsters Package Division were on-hand this week in Mississippi to celebrate Davis’s impressive lifelong career and wish him well in the next chapter. The Teamster was also recognized and celebrated by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D, MS-02).
Congratulations, Smiley, on behalf of 1.3 million rank-and-file Teamsters across the country!
