The majority of Nigerians in South Africa they're here on study visas and tourist visas that have expired . In the 2023-24 financial year, 18,115 foreign nationals applied for study visas, and 12,219 were approved. Nigerians consistently rank among the top applicants for these visas. Home Affairs has been unable to provide evidence as to which institutions they are studying at and what happened after they completed their studies.
Take the case of Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, he entered South Africa in 2022 on a fraudulent tourist visa, overstayed by two months, had a study visa rejected, and was later flagged for cash-buying an R3 million sports car. His re-entry remains unexplained, highlighting serious failures in border management and a web of collusion between Home Affairs officials and foreign nationals.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of South African students who qualify for university are turned away. In 2025, only about 202,000 first-year students were admitted into public universities, yet over 345,000 matriculants achieved Bachelor passes and more than 700,000 qualified for some form of tertiary study. Public universities simply cannot expand fast enough due to funding and infrastructure constraints that lock first-year intake at around 200,000 to 210,000 annually. That leaves a "persistent pool of qualified but unplaced" young South Africans some 127,000 in 2024 alone. The system is essentially rationing seats. So where are these Nigerians studying?
Our government has failed us not by letting students overstay, but by allowing fraudulent documents and corrupt officials to undermine the system. We're against the lawlessness that lets criminals slip through while our own people suffer. That's the reality we can't ignore.

Sepp Blatter was corrupt for his love of money, took bribes for countries to host tournaments, but NEVER did he corrupt the sanctity and legitimacy of the game played on the pitch.
Abuti, mara why is South Africa's communications machinery creating gaps that can be exploited? SA is always coming to correct falsehoods that have become viral rather than getting ahead of the narrative. It's time to learn from the Macron and Carney book. If there are no security risks, why not release the information yourselves at the time that an agreement was reached?
Given current regional and geopolitical tensions, comms must ASSUME any information can be distorted and misrepresented. So what stops South Africa from proactively releasing a short statement "South Africa welcomes the joint agreement with Ghana to delay the BNC....we appreciate "our friend" Ghana's collaborative spirit in granting our request for the delay. South Africa and Ghana share mutual blah blah blah and we look forward to blah blah blah..." Otherwise you are going to be dribbled by your "friends." Release the stuff and get ahead of the narrative. Especially if there are no state secrets being compromised.
